As as designer, I see thousands of products daily, so for an item to make me pause, it must be exceptional. For instance, have a look at these pillows by Bolla Studio. Each pillow is custom designed and handmade. The concept of the pillow designs is "Throw Art". These pillows are meant to accessorize a home like a piece of art or jewelry and are accented with hardware, stones, and unusual materials such as plumbing filters and wood shavings. The packaging is almost as clever as the designs themselves....an eco-friendly burlap bag with drawstring. And if that doesn't charm you, the chocolate bar will!

Two wonderful design shops I found in New Orleans were Source, the most delightful shop with the sweetest proprietors around! It was like walking into an ethereal dream of whitewashed colors and gentle shapes. Check out the art and furniture!

About re-upholstery, here is the thing: unless the piece is an heirloom, outrageously sentimental, or outstanding quality, DON'T reupholster. It is more cost effective, in that case, to purchase a new, good quality item. Here is a small case study: a lovely young couple, the sweetest ever! They are starting a new family and want to keep certain traditions, hence the passing down of their authentic William Morris furniture, straight from the Arts and Crafts Movement. Check out the before and afters of the William Morris chair. I found a gorgeous genuine Arts and Crafts fabric (now discontinued!) at Osborne and Little. And the transformation begins. A brand new chair from a different era, a family treasure for years to come!

Things are looking great! Just did a faux finish on the walls to simulate concrete (like the building outside it, seamless transition between indoors and out)!
Door has been built from a reclaimed barn, a silvery "greige" that defines our color palette...that's going in next.

Okay, not many of you can actually say LOVE drywall, but when it is done right, it is really an art form. One of the things that distinguishes a construction project from Good to Spectacular is a smooth, even, plumb application of this element...

LOOK at those columns! (oookay so maybe I get excited over things the average person does not.)
BUT!! It just gets us closer to the final result:

As you know from the last post, the hide rug is in, then we are adding a sliding "barn" door from reclaimed wood, top down bottom up shades, and a snazzy red accent color...stay tuned!

There is something very satisfying about the first day of demolition on a new job. Here, we are knocking down a wall to install a reclaimed wood barn door with stainless steel track. The result will be edgy/modern industrial.
Also included the image of the faux hide rug that will be in the room behind the door (once the new flooring goes in). Stay tuned!

Dawn of a new Architectural Digest?

As much as I liked how Paige Rense ran Architectural Digest, and how she worked into her EIGHTIES running the most exclusive shelter magazine (WAY TO GO GIRL), I was also excited to see how former Elle Decor editor in chief, Margaret Russell was going to fill her shoes. Imagine my delight when my January issue came. On the Editors Page, Russell deferentially paid due homage to Rense. And one amazing change I noticed in the Letters to the Editor: a negative letter! I'm not promoting bashing this wonderful magazine, but doesn't it seem a bit more realistic that some readers would dislike some parts of the magazine, at least some of the time? It was a mild critique, (requesting more design, less celebrity) but it is progress, isn't it? Other changes were very subtle if at all, making me wonder whether Russell will stay with the staid, formal layout, or inject some fresh energy. What do you think, will the title be only "AD?" More colorful or more modern?Time will tell. In the meantime check out the deliciousness:

The Proofs are In!

At the end of a design process, not only does the client have new, beautiful spaces to relax in, but the designer gets to document his or her work. Getting the proofs back after a photo shoot is like opening a lovely gift. I am lucky to have a wonderful photographer, Holly, who "gets" me and always takes a picture with the exact angle, closeup, or mood I am after. Checkout the latest!

We installed this flooring and new built in wall in an Arts and Crafts style. Check out the straight lines and mill work! The fireplace stone is a beautiful Cosa Verde marbke made into .5 x3" bricks, and larger field tiles on the hearth.

In a dining room, an elegant shade with gold beads that catch the light

One of my favorite treatments of all time, the deep blue with gold cording and blue and gold beads. The swags have a band of gold fabric to offset the beading. Can you see how fabrics can become an obsession?

Kitchen lamp installations, note the repetition of form...even in the background window treatments, square box pleated valance with SQUARE beads! Ha!

The two wallpapers above look like tile. The first graphic paper is lovely against a painted frame made to look like stainless steel. The grey 1x1 wallpapers look just like tiles---but a lot easier to install in a straight line.
This is an inset of a floor with a glass and marble tile mix. Its all in the details!

In LA; Design for the good of the community

Imagine my delight, when on Facebook, I not only found an old friend, Jon Burleson, but also a kindred spirit: we both have a great interest in home design, remodeling, and anything that involves ripping out the old and putting in the new.

Although Jon is not a designer or a general contractor (although I wish he would move back east and help me out with a project or two!), he is extremely gifted in, "making and building things." An mechanical engineering consultant, Jon likes to tinker with construction as a hobby, and to give back to his community.

Above is one of the projects Jon recently completed: The Youth House in Verdugo Woodlands, California.

The Youth House, also known as The Dad's Club has been home to all sorts of programs for kids: Scouts, Pancake breakfasts, Little League, educational programs, etc. Keep up the good work Jon! And keep sending pictures of your newly completed rooms!

From Rendering to Reality!

Here are a couple design ideas that became reality today. As you know, custom items take a while to create, but they are worth the wait! The first picture is of a beautiful navy and gold window treatment with swags and micro cording that draws the eye up to the intricate beading. It also breaks up the expanse of that beautiful blue silk fabric. Can't wait for the professional pictures to go live on my blog, this picture doesn 't do it justice. The second set of pictures represents my idea for a sitting area in a master bedroom, we hung that huge mirror on a stud wall and created a tranquil respite for hardworking homeowners!

Last Thursday night was a spectacular evening to bounce around town. First, the Washington Design Center with fellow designers for a cocktail hour.
Then to the Corcoran Gallery of Art for Capitol File's 5th Anniversary party! Happy Birthday to a great magazine! It was also a cover party for TV personality Tim Gunn. Being the fashion expert he is, the event did not disappoint!
Candy covered "shoes," surrounded the room filled with melt-in-your-mouth truffles and other goodies.
Dressmakers model forms sported sumptuous fabrics and delicious marzipan-looking gowns. From the runway, to the flowers, to the outsize cake, it was an night to remember!

A few evenings ago, I had the pleasure of attending another great Capital File event.

Hosted by Chris Samuels, former Redskin and philanthropist, the event took place in the David Yurman store in Tysons Galleria. When purchasing some of the delectible jewelry that evening, a percentage of the proceeds went to Chris's charitable foundation, which helps stablilize local communities through economic development, home ownership, youth initiatives, and education.

Showing up for support were fellow Redskins DeAngelo Hall and Mike Williams. It was an honor to spend the evening with them. Mike attended with his lovely and incredibly nice wife, Enisha. She offered to snap the photos!
Also in attendance, were two of my cronies, Lisa Tureson, a wonderfully talented artist (center second picture), and Carly Curtis (far right second picture), a fabulous tile and granite designer.

Some Sisters!

Over the weekend I was in Olney, MD, and stumbled across this charming little shop, Sisters Sandwiches & Such. I was delighted to find that not only was it a cafe, but a shop where the two sisters found, refurbished, and sold reclaimed furnishings and art. They travel all over the country turning, as they say, "trash into treasures."

This house has some great history: in 1823 it was built as Higgins Tavern, unique for that time because it was owned by women! The irony here is that women rarely spent time in the taverns, which were community epicenters for these rural communities. In the early 1920s, the property was sold to Martin's Dairy and ice cream parlor. It was also the Martin family home (behind the cash register is an actual artifact from the dairy: a crumbling wall, old receipts, and dairy bottles). Now it sits on a busy highway, Georgia Avenue, and the community has built up right around it. Yes, there is a Starbuck in a strip mall right behind it... :| .Anyway, the shop takes you back in time, with lovely handcrafted art, old shutters repurposed as window valances (loved that!); even mini chandeliers made out of old silverware. The rustic, homespun feeling made me yearn to dig out some time in my schedule to start antiquing and crafting again! But for now, I will just keep coming back to Sisters...Did I mention the sandwiches are OUT OF THIS WORLD?!

So, I needed to keep reminding myself that I was in Paris for the Maison Objet, not to shop for clothing. But home design and fashion design are extremely related (at least thats how I justify some excursions for dresses, bags, throws, and the like).

The first image depicts a fantastical dress made out of leather, the second was a dress I coveted but didn't think would fit in my suitcase...

And I was this close to taking this wrap home with me, but, as most vendors require, they had a minimum order. So I didnt need 6000 of these, I am sure you understand.

Now onto the real reason for my visit, the furniture trade show! So much inspiration. If I could compare and contrast Maison Objet to High Point market, I would say that Maison vendors give you less "stuff:"High Point vendors give you logo bags, pens, sticky notes, catalogs, binders, tearsheets, line cards, you get the idea. Maison is a bit more adroit in that European way: if you like it, buy it!

Here is what I found extremely inspiring:

Talk about the fusion of design and fashion: Jean Paul Gualtier displayed his first collection with furniture house Roche Bobois. And just like the runways, there is the element of designing purely for art's sake, not to actually sit in (unless you would like to fly zipping across your living room in these chairs he created on the right).

Even though acrylic furniture is not everyones cup of tea, I just adore it. It adds tables, chairs etc, where you need them but doesn't take up any visual weight. I prefer to use it in modern applications however, although it is perfectly fine to mix it with your traditional pieces.

The contemporary vignettes dazzled me. Love the lavenders with cream.

Bed linens offered fresh...and sometimes frightening...displays (check out the floor in 2nd pic down), complete with bling and saturated color.

As I have said before, lighting is everything and never ceases to disappoint!

And perhaps my favorite display of the show, the all white room. love the mix of modern and traditional, new and old. The straight lined table with the busts in the background. That juxtaposition defines Europe to a T....bring in the new and marry it with the old.

What an amazing event last night at the The Dupont Hotel! If you haven't been to this quaint boutique hotel, get there! The Dupont Circle location just got a major facelift...check out the hyperlink! They also have similar locations in two of my favorite international cities, Cork and London.

So where was I? Ah yes the party. A wonderfully talented, not to mention down-to-earth and approachable Cap File cover star, John Legend, was kind enough to pose for myriad pictures! He also sang a few songs and pleasantly greeted all the Washingtonians in attendance. Special thanks to some very special folks at Capitol File Magazine : Jason Binn, Publisher Niche Media, and Jennifer Blacker, Account Manager, for making my evening especially divine. Cap File always has the best parties! And of course, what's a party without Grey Goose vodka, where specialty cocktails flowed generously all evening!

Other local celebs included Jim Handly (bottom left) from NBC4, a bright spot on TV in our city, and the lovely (so lovely she doesn't have a face for radio)Sara Fraser (bottom center) from HOT 99.5FM.

And last, but certainly not least, my patient, saintly husband Steve, who can have fun even when I don't let him get a word in edgewise. I couldn't do it all without him!

Fireplace! Almost finished---

I just couldn't wait to share this installation with you, but stay tuned because in about a month I can show you the final result. The charge for this family room: redo the flooring, fireplace, mantel, add built-ins, and eventually rugs, casegoods, and furnishings. Phase one has been completed--remodeling the fireplace. The first step was choosing this A-MAZING marble, a green called Verde Luchensa. It is simply divine in the .5 x4" bricks, and heavenly in the larger slabs for the hearth.
Step two--Pick a new floor tile, in this case, a lovely porcelain in a larger size 18 x 18. Generally we dont specify 12x12s any more, they are a bit "tired" unless you have a smaller space. Sorry about my toes in that shot, but don't you love the polish color? :) Step Three:get new fireplace doors. Clients love the Arts & Crafts design style, so I chose something with straight lines and geometric shapes. Step Four:
and perhaps the most important: no matter how gorgeous the stone is, the tile expert's work needs to be flawless. Not a problem for my tile guy, who is the most meticulous artist . Do you know how hard it is to install small stone tiles perfectly straight? Especially when 99% of walls and floors are not plumb? It's extremely difficult, but my tiler does it with finesse. And here are all the elements put together! Love it. When it was completed, I got misty. It literally is that beautifully created. Stay tuned for the completed project soon!

Lighting is everything

That statement is so true! Good lighting design creates a magical environment. You probably know that in 2012, incandescents are being phased out in the US. While it's a huge step for the environment, some designers see it as time of mourning,due to that lovely warm colored light they emit. Luckily, LED's are getting better--brighter and warmer and lovelier! And so much cooler temperature than the incandescents--a win--win for interior design and the environment. Take for instance, the new Cree CR6 LED (left). According to R&DB mag, it is designed to "blanket a room with light at minimal operating cost and maximum warmth and beauty."

But remembering the origins of LED's (i.e., computer screens, etc), LED's can be used for just plain fun:

Ipswich Wedding

As you now know, if you have been following along, this summer while in Europe, we visited the quaint English town where my husband was born. His lovely cousins live there and had an absolutely gorgeous wedding! And those Brits can PARTY!

The color palette was perfect, a bright and very current pink and green... check out the pink champagne, the flowers, and what is an event these days without cupcakes?

While in Ipswich we stayed at a golf resort called Hintlesham Hall , an Elizabethan Manor House dating back from the 16th century. Elegant carved balusters,wide plank floors and elegant curtains dress up the common areas.

We stayed in the Cherry Orchard room, a beautiful loft with a patio garden. Check out the scale of the amazing window! Loved how they repeated the window panel pattern on the pillows and in the bedding in the loft. Gorgeous!

Affable Alfie's

While in London I had the pleasure of shopping at Alfie's Antiques, a brilliant collection of antique, vintage, and 20th century gems. Located at 13-25 Church Street in Marylebone, Alfie's is the perfect place to find a unique object to jump start (or put the finishing touch on) any deisgn project. I first spied an Arne Jacobsen Egg chair in a brown houndstooth pattern, about to get a facelift. As I wended my way through the market, I fell in love with the midcentury modern lighting... these pieces great for a funky foyer or over a modern dining table! I cant wait to go back and stock up!

Design Quest in Cork

Inspiration is everywhere. I especially seek it out when I travel. Ireland is one of my favorite places. Cork, or County Cork, means, "marsh," and is situated on the River Lee. It is a major seaport and the second largest city in Ireland.

What I love about the downtown area is that historical architecture is juxtaposed with lovely, often bright colors.
It's unexpected color, not the usual "greige."

Below, an Irish Bar with a German owner---being half German myself, I loved that they were celebrating Germany's latest victory in the worldcup (they had just won against England). Lots of fans spilled out of Cavanaughs with the German flag painted on their faces!

Hayfield Manor , a mansion built in 1920, was a delightful hotel with beautiful greenery and historic touches

The lobby of the hotel remains the same as if it were a private home with a library, conservatory, double staircase, and fireplace. Love the coffered ceilings also. And although the designs of the hotel remained very traditional (check out the swags and jabots on that window), There was always a touch of the unexpected modern(see plexiglass flower vase). Whether intentional or not, I love the European confidence in design of mixing old and new.

Speaking of mixing styles, The Orchid Room, the breakfast restaurant was my absolute favorite. HOW MUCH did I love the lavender tinted sea grass wallpaper, the crushed velvet lavender upholstered chairs, the draping of gossamer fabrics, and the pickled wood floors! The artwork was highlighted by bright purple spotlights, and the art deco mirrored accents truly added to the glamour.

And of course, what I loved almost as much as my search for design....the beer! Kilkenny Cream ale served warm.

Just installed new pendants and window treatments for this client. Love the design on the pendant, and we are doing a fabric in the same design for the dining room windows. The valances in the kitchen repeat the geometric shapes---right down to the trim!

Halls of Fame Opening Night Gala

The Washington Design World was decked out last night in black tie for the Washington Design Center's showhouse for 2010. In the new conference room on the 5th floor, designers created lovely rooms for inspiriation. For more info on the participating designers, go tothe design center website. It was so crowded, it was hard to get a whole room view, but here are some highlights: Loved this art installation in one of the rooms. It gives the appearance of continuing through the floor(left). And who doesn't love a grand scale Rococo mirror?

But of course the design doesnt come to life without the people. Here I am with some experts in the field Above: Lauren Liess, and me. Check out her blog on the hyperlink. Beautiful Inside and Out

The title of this post is referring to the family who lives in this home--some of the most wonderful and kind-hearted folks I have met. It was a pleasure designing their amazing home, which, is ALMOST as lovely as the people they are, and the friends they have become. Here is the library...we are heading toward a "Chinoiserie" theme here.... Check out the pagoda on the valances so perfectly centered (LOVE my workroom!)

Last night I was at Oya Restaurant, an incredible place. Not only is the food delicous, the decor smashing (see below), and the drinks flowing, it was a Capitol File magazine party, and they always throw a terrific bash. I think I put these photos in backwards because that first one of me is not wanting to leave, I had such a good time. And did I mention Anna Kournikova was there? She was there covergirl. Not the most social sort, but lovely just the same.

A "W"-onderful Place to Be

Perhaps one of the best sources of inspiriation for a designer is South Beach, or SOBE as the really cool people refer to it :). With its rich history of Art Deco (more about that on the next post),

beautiful weather, interesting people, and amazing hotels, one is enveloped with enough sensory input to last a liftetime.

Last time we were there we stayed at the glorious new W Hotel , which has a fresh, modern take on Florida living. Check it out:

And my favorite--the front desk hosted two huge Warhols from the owner's private collection. Awe inspiring!

The penthouse suites did not disappoint with an edgy, contemporary look (below), mixed with a few nods to art deco. When you visit South Beach, you will never want to come home!

Green Clean!

For Washingtonians, who have finally dug out from the blizzard, now it't time to prep for Spring---how about taking a fresh start with eco friendly cleansers?

The New York Times, one of my favorite sources for all things associated with the home, mentioned some great chemical-free brands (remember, indoor air quality is 2-5x worse than outdoor because of all the stuff we bring in). Seventh Generation, in fact, uses "thymol," an oil derived from the herb thyme, which acts as a disinfectant. Brilliant!

If you are old school, as one NYT letter to the editor mentioned, you can always use what grandma did: baking soda,white vinegar, lemons, are a good start!

Only Green Paint from now on.

It's an amazing thing when the stars align, you know, like when you purchase a blue car, and then all you can see for the next year are blue vehicles exactly like yours?!

Similarly, now that I am a certified Green Accredited Professional, opportunities to use green products are everywhere. Case in point,

one of my favorite publications, The New York Times had an amazing article today regarding the best LOW or NO VOC paints. Volatile Organic Compounds, which I am sure some of you have heard of by now, are the off gases emitted by paint, fabric, furnishings...in other words, almost any product you bring into your home has been treated with some sort of chemical that emits toxins into the air. Not good for asthmatics and even has been linked to cancer.

So, paint has been a big offender, but many new companies have come out with paints that don't off gas. The NYT article tested 10 great ones (use hyperlink for entire article), but I am loyal to my Benjamin Moore Natura Paint, economical, and voted by the tester as going on the smoothest. A step forward in the Green Direction!

Greetings all! Fellow Washingtonians, hope you are safe and warm in this blizzard!

I recently completed a course in Sustainable and Eco Friendly Design, and received my certification as a "Green AP." This course was developed in conjunction with the Sustainable Furnishings Council, The Rainforest Alliance, The World Wildlife Fund, and USGBC/LEED. I have lots of incredible information on how the home furnishings industry affects the environment, and have a wide range of product solutions, most of which do not cost more than traditional pieces. Future posts will suggest eco friendly products that I know you will love.

Hello readers! I have missed you, but Im back! Some of you may know I was a school counselor in my previous life. So, when I got the call that a brand new, state of the art, assessment center was being constructed in NW DC, I jumped at the chance to be a part of the design. This center, open to young children in need of various types of testing for school readiness, was a labor of love. Casually Swank

My dear friend Theresa introduced me to a FABULOUS little establishment in Old Town, called, "The Majestic."
This sweet little cafe, originally opening in 1932, was re-opened this year. Not only is the food exceptional, the decor--art deco, old-time neighborhood diner feel---is worth the trip. One step inside and I was transported back to the early midcentury. Check out the period chandeliers and the tight-back banquette. The neon sign out front calls you in for a trip down memory lane.

Back to Gold

First it was brass...remember that brass and glass wall unit you had (or your parents....or depending on the age of my dear reader, your grandparents...?!) anyway, then stainless steel came in, and it has remained High and Stable as the #1 design preference for kitchens, baths, and around-the-house hardware. Then came (and went...?) oiled bronze, which, I sort of still like but never got a request for.

BUT!! Kohler has come out with a masterpiece. Behold, the Vibrant Moderne Brushed Gold. Isnt it DIVINE?? Let me know if you want one. Now, Im off to run through my house to swap out all the hardware. Are you next? :)

Fall at the WDC

Fall is an exciting time at the Washington Design Center. Lectures, events, openings...its one big party for designers! The first image here, is my great friend and designer Shannon and me, with a quite famous interior designer, Barclay Butera. Mr. Butera was in DC for a lecture on the Business of Design, and one wonderful idea I gleaned from his talk was the concept of "Positive Energy." A simple, but helpful way of being in our busy lives.

Another exciting happening at the design center, my friend and colleage, Michal Bahlo, is just about ready for the grand opening of his showroom...

Warrickshire Woodcrafters. Michael has built luxurious and reasonably priced built ins for many of my clients.

Another big party night at the Design Center was the Designer Showhouse, where talented local designers decorate spaces in the lower level. This years theme was "Potomac Fever." Here we are attending the opening night: I'm with my friends from Home and Design Magazine, Mechelle Tate and Mary Sue Jedele.

An Artistic City

Although the Watergate's lower level does still hold on to that late 60's early 70's chic, I still find the design intriguing (look closely at the fountain---beautiful!). And what a concept for the first building in the area where you "never have to leave"--there's a grocery a drycleaner, a flower shop....even offices (some offices more famous than others, lol)!

One office nestled in this quiet little mecca is

the International Child Art Foundation, an amazing organization that promotes childrens' art from around the glob, while helping the build a,"more prosperous and nonviolent world."

The art, is beautiful. Pictured here is the lovely chairman, Dr. Asfaq Ishaq, who can tell you the history of ICAF and all its wonderful programs.

And the prints are $40---yes, thats it, $40 for original prints! Check out the website, it is fabulous, and of course you can order online!

Identity Crisis?

Personality is usually a good indicator of design taste, i.e., what colors you wear, how energetic or active you are, etc. Those who know me would describe my personality as the first three pictures (a colorful rhino? Well, I am sort of loud, in your face, unstoppable... and the memo board? That is my system of organization in my office--and I know where to find everything), and the bright turquoise room? I guess that's symbolic of my "vibrant" personality):

But! Like all good designers, I keep an idea file of tearsheets, arranged of course by my system of filing....and look what I've been putting in the "Love This!" section:

New York State of Mind

Just so you know--- I love love love the Washington Post's home section. However, from time to time I step out on our local paper (okay, I read it every Thursday, full disclosure) to get all the brillance that the NY Times churns out as well. So here are a few things that I love--

This desk is amazing for small spaces--it is only 36x23! I KNOW! AND it has a storage ottoman, so its a real space saver! It has great straight lines for a modern or contemporary decor.But the price is the best part it's only $150 at Office Max , great for creating an extra space to put your laptop and store all your goodies!This artwork is fascinating---these images of run down homes in Detroit were captured by a photographer---they will eventually be torn down (insert sobs here). They are so beautiful it's a shame! Can't we do something? Well, you can help the greater good, the artist is donating 30% of his earnings to habitat for humanity. Feeling Blue

I've been feeling very partial to blue lately, but who wouldn't with these rooms:
This nursery, above, has to be the most beautiful in the world. LOOK--LOOK at the bedskirts! And the grey blue palette is DIVINE.

This (above) looks like a kitchen in the Hamptons, where you can just come in and relax in utter elegance.

The grey blue and white of this bath above doesn't complete with the beautiful water outside. And the slipper chair is such a sweet, feminine touch.

This stairway landing was done by David Mitchell in the Southern Accents Showhouse, which I had the pleasure of touring because it was done locally. I can't think of a more soothing home I've seen. All of these images are from Southern Accents magazine, and yes you will still love this mag even if you are a yankee :)

Bell--isimo!

I must admit, when I saw the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," I didn't like Kristin Bell. I mean of course, her character in the eponymous movie, because she was a major witch. And sometimes you sort of typecast actors into the roles they select. However, the July Issue of In Style featured Kristin's home. Being a designer, of course I HAD to peek:

Hope you can see these pics, I scanned them but if you can LOOK at that wallpaper in the bedroom. I am in love! And I also love the color palette and open shelving in the dining room. That's the thing about open shelving, you need to be somewhat of a neat freak or it totally loses the pretty effect.

Simple white kitchen, fun stool seat fabric, pretty shade of green...and! She is a dog lover! Okay, she is warming up in my book.

Living room is swank. Again love the color palette, the garden stools in silver, the floral covered ottoman. Tres chic!

So I GUESS if she invited me over for cocktails I would go (not like I would be invited, but anyway). I also love her shoes! And I hope in her next movie she plays someone sweet.

About the title of this post, most of these rugs are made in Pakistan, not Persia, however the vast majority of hand knotted (done by HAND as opposed to hand tufted, done by gun or machine), rugs, in the world, replicatet he Persian-style designs. What's Up for Walls

I must confess--I have not been a HUGE fan of wallpaper for many years. My painter doesnt install it, my contractor is loathe to remove it, and my WONDERFUL decorative painter Felix can do A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G with paint. BUT!!!!!! Yes, they are back and they are in (have been for a while). And I adore them. Hope to use them for the next project. The first three are from Farrow and Ball, LOVE this British Company, not only do they have serious English Country House Prints, but they also get so "cheeky:" (and although this is off the subject, my husband, who is British, says that I cannot do a really good accent--I tend to disagree I think I sound like I just had tea with the queen) but anyway...yes, the wallpapers:

Whats Up Mag mentioned that so much of the new wall stuff has TEXTURE. Here is an example of that (above). In addition to this, wallpapers have sueded finishes, beaded finishes, everything you can think of! Get out there and explore!

Let them DESIGN cake!

Did I ever tell you about my wedding cake (or lack thereof)?!?! Well, a YEAR, ONE YEAR in advance, I sent the caterer renderings pictures specifications, the kitchen sink...to create the cake Ive wanted since I was a little girl--a Traditional German Gingerbread House, with candy glass windows, lighted inside, elaborate mouldings, carvings, and corbels. Needless to say, the caterer REALLYmessed up, and my gingerbread house was SO disappointing...I cant even go on because Im still not over it... BUT!!!! These cakes are magnificent--the ULTIMATE in design.

They cheer me up! Here are my top three:

Tell me these dont pass for REAL pillows: Who doesn't love the awesome-ness of Big Ben...in a CAKE. This is the caterer I should have chosen for my wedding...someone who can actually construct a BUILDING!
